Ciarán Myers is the sixth of seven children in a first-generation Irish-Canadian family, now a doting father, in Waterloo Region. He writes, directs, produces, teaches, performs, sweeps the stage, and broods longingly.
Just as MacLuan said “the medium is the message” Ciarán believes that, in all things, form is content. In this way he attempts to be categorized as an artist across mediums rather than strictly tethered to his background in theatre.
Select career highlights include a one-act comedy play performed by and for incarcerated women at a mixed security federal prison (Theatre of the Beat), being the first OAC supported Artist-in-Residence at Kitchener’s GreenLight Arts, years of Irish Dancing and performing choreographic experimentations in non-traditional time signatures, multiple publications including one piece among very fine company in the Playwrights Canada Press Anthology, Refractions: Scenes, having public access to an audio-digital community-engaged narrative piece permanently installed in a city park (Registry Theatre), helping to spearhead a still-ongoing showcase of new student work to the general public, as well as a long practice of teaching many artistic disciplines to young people.
Ciarán is extremely privileged with an MFA in Script Writing from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Since graduating from there in 2015 he has primarily devoted his energies to caring for his small family and making intermittent contributions to the simmering arts scene in Waterloo Region, Ontario. It was in response to specific needs and challenges faced by the Region of Waterloo’s creative community that Ciarán was able to do a Metcalf Foundation Internship to study Artistic Leadership with the wonderful team at the Theatre Centre in Toronto in 2022 and 2023. The actionable results of his learnings there are still forthcoming.
Over the years Ciarán has had nearly twenty original plays produced or workshopped for ticketed audiences across four different countries. He has directed or co-directed another dozen premiers and workshops locally. Ciarán has also had two collections of poetry edited and distributed by local indie micro-publishers.
As well as his great privileges with the Metcalf Foundation and at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Ciarán is also an alumnus of the Stratford Festival’s Playwrights Retreat, Director’s Lab North, the Traverse Theatre’s Director’s Program, Driftwood Theatre’s Playwrights Unit, and the University of Waterloo.
Ciarán believes that the highest function of art is to develop community. He believes all storytelling is political and he is madly grateful to his loved ones for all the opportunities he has been able to spin into meaningful contributions.
